What is Naturopathy?

Naturopathy is an alternative form of medicine, one that enables the body’s natural healing mechanism to prevent and treat health conditions. Naturopathy provides an individualized approach to healthcare, with a key philosophy that all disease, illness and presentation is not the same for each person. Naturopathic Doctors conduct a thorough patient intake and use laboratory diagnostic tests to obtain a better health picture. A Naturopathic Doctor also learns what biological, hormonal and physiological imbalances are occurring in order to determine what natural, evidence-based treatments will benefit the patient the most.

Naturopathic Education

Naturopathy is a regulated health profession in Ontario, with approximately 4100 hours of classroom training along with 1200 of supervised clinical experience. To become a Naturopathic Doctor, you must have a 4 year pre-medical undergraduate degree, followed by 4 years of naturopathic education from an accredited school. After completing a rigorous and comprehensive curriculum and graduating, students have to successfully complete 2 theory-based licensing exams along with 1 practical licensing exam in order to become a licensed Naturopathic Doctor. Naturopathic Doctors are also required to remain up to date with current research, treatment protocols and disease management by earning Continuing Education credits. The College of Naturopaths of Ontario is the regulatory body that ensures that naturopathic doctors are up to date in their credentials and fit to practice in Ontario under the Naturopathy Act of 2007.
